Abstract
Examines the effects of oxygen addition on diesel engine combustion parameters and pollutant emissions.  Oxygen is enriched by adding oxygenate additive to the diesel fuel.  Authors describe oxygenate selection criterion and emission reduction in modern diesel engines.
Critical fuel blending properties were used to screen and identify viable oxygenate additives.  Diethylene glycol dimethyl ether meets the requirements of high oxygen content, diesel fuel solubility, cost, toxicity, flashpoint, viscosity, water solubility in the resultant fuel blend, oxygenate extractability from the fuel and minimal impact on the natural diesel fuel cetane number.
