Abstract
Post-combustion capture strategies appear to be more practical short-term solutions to the the need for efficient carbon capture and storage. This is due to the fact that existing plants are more easily retrofitted for implementation of CCS technologies with minimal capital costs. Among these processes, CO2 absorption into aqueous solutions along a biomimetic route is a promising option.
The process is based on CO2 absorption enhanced by the enzyme carbonic anhydrase. Authors provide an overview of the recent literature on biomimetic carbon capture and patented technologies proposed. They focus on key issues related to design of process units for implementation of biomimetic CO2 capture. They discuss both regenerative and non-regenerative options, as well as the contribution of carbonic anhydrase.
