Recovery of H2S from gases emitted by heavy crude

ABSTRACT
The recovery of sulfur refers to the process of gas denaturalization, which
recovers elementary sulfates from gaseous hydrogen sulfide. H2S is released to
the atmosphere mainly in gas form, coming into contact with it forms SO3 and
H2SO4. SO3 can decompose ever more and is one of the basic elements of the acid
rain.
Today the industry must worry for reducing to the environmental damage; one of
ways is to reduce emissions of gases that contain sulfur, and to take advantage
of this to their recovery from H2S. There are several methods to recover
sulfur, some with disadvantages as being too expensive or many steps with a
complex infraestructure.
The
Mexican company Geo Estratos S.A. de C.V. as a solution proposes the
utilization of their product H2S-End. This product allows removing the H2S
present in the gas turning it into elementary sulfur; in addition, the product
has the advantage of being reused by regenerating the oxidizing treatment, but
should be used in gases with traces of hydrogen sulfide, that is to say not
very bitter gases. A posttreatment to the obtained sulfur may allow using it in
its pure form (up to 95%).
Experiments were realized by triplicate with known amounts of the
product, together with volumes of H2S also known. The precipitated sulfur was
subjected to washings and gravimetrically was determined the quantity obtained.
Achieved yields ranging between 97-98% compared to the theoretical yield of the
process.
About the results obtained at the laboratory the product offers a high
performance recovery. This means that each cubic meter of H2S End will consume
approximately 16.5-16.6 Kg of H2S (equivalent to 13850-13990 liters in normal
conditions of pure gas), it will produce about 15.5-15.6 Kg of elementary
sulfur of substantial purity.
