SUMMARY
Industrial wastewater is different from municipal wastewater, while the limits for treated effluent discharge and the target for re-use are typically the same and derived from the BAT for municipal wastewater treatment. Also main treatment unitary processes are the same; however a proper adaptation to the specificity of the different industrial wastewater streams is needed.
The paper aims to provide some real life examples of challenges due to the specificity of wastewater source (high TDS, high temperature, some specific streams like the spent caustic), to the lack of previous similar experiences (like the use of membrane bioreactor for refineries and/or the use of absorption chillers and plate and frame heat exchanger) or to specific legislation aiming to protect sensitive environment (limits on total nitrogen or on soluble metals) were faced and overcome achieving treatment and/or re-use standards. Moreover the items related to the overall optimization of the water cycle around the industrial facilities with appropriate utilization of existing wastewater treatment units for the most appropriate purpose as well as the selection between municipal and industrial treated effluents as a source for water re-use are also discussed.
