Energy optimization and improving efficiency monitoring in
Sisak Oil Refinery (RNS)

Abstract
An oil refinery requires considerable energy for
production, transport, product storage and additional needs. ‘Energy & nets
management’ and ‘Production’ divisions within Sisak Oil Refinery (RNS) are
closely associated. Since both their capacity and efficiency are extremely
interdependent, there is an opportunity for detailed optimization of the oil
refinery as a whole.
The internal power plant ‘Energana 2’ is an
integral part of ‘Energy & nets management’ division. Due to its size and
installed power, it has a notable effect on production. It is the main power source, and practically
the only power source in the new part of the refinery. The power plant produces
high pressure (HP), middle pressure (MP) and low pressure (LP) steam for
different levels of production, as well as electricity.
The current ‘Energana 2’ monitoring and management system was upgraded in 2008
(based on the PCS7 Siemens system), which allows for notably improved
possibilities for monitoring of system parameters. The monitoring and
management system for the 30 MW turbo-generator (TG-30 MW) was finished in 2007
by Siemens. Appropriate equipment for efficiency monitoring of the power plant
and the refinery as a whole was never installed. Since this presents a
significant problem, the possibilities for improvement of efficiency monitoring
will be analyzed herein.
‘Energy optimization model’ is used in everyday production and optimization in
Sisak Refinery. As a result of optimum production by modelling saving has
increased for about 10-20% or 200,000- 400,000 Euro/year, depending on refinery
energy demand. Model is completely developed with ‘Energy and nets management’
own resources. Savings achieved without capital investment.
