ABSTRACT:
Recent developments in the field of two-dimensional crystals such as monolayers of graphene and molybdenum disulfide will be reviewed. The different techniques that have been employed to prepare the materials such as mechanical and solution exfoliation, and chemical vapour deposition are discussed briefly. The characterization method employed to characterise the materials are described and properties of the materials discussed. Potential applications of the materials in fields such as nanocomposites and catalysis are then described.
Introduction
The past few years has seen a massive upsurge in interest in the preparation and properties of two-dimensional crystals following the isolation of monolayers of graphene in Manchester in 2004 which led to the award of the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics to Andre Geim and Kostya Novoselov. These materials have interesting and unusual electronic and mechanical properties as well as high specific surface area. They therefore have massive potential for a wide range of applications in different fields of science and technology.
