Introduction
The
environmental impact of petroleum production and processing industries is often
negative, since they generate a considerable amount of wastewater and consume
large quantities of water. Due to the complexity of the effluents generated by
petroleum industries, residual compounds often remain after biological
treatment.
Some studies reported that peroxide-based advanced oxidation
processes (AOP) such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) combined with ultraviolet
irradiation (UV) are effective in removing organic matter from wastewaters
generated by petroleum processing facilities (Stepnowski et al., 2002; Souza et
al., 2011). In this study, we evaluated the combination of H2O2 and UV for the
post-treatment of a petroleum refinery wastewater previously treated in a
biofilter. Reverse osmosis (RO) was used as a final polish to adequate the
effluent for reuse.
