Abstract
Fuel cells and hybrid systems show great promise.  However, large amounts of hydrogen will be required.
The cleanest method of producing hydrogen to date is water electrolysis.  Solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOEC) have attracted a great interest since they offer significant power and higher efficiencies compared to conventional low temperature electrolysers. Authors review their applications, performances and material issues.
