Abstract
Numerous practical considerations must to be factored into the design of the underlying networking protocols for wireless sensor network (WSN) applications. A major requirement, for example, could be the need to involve more than one sink node, i.e. more than one data destination, in the network. This is due to the need for the WSN to monitor several phenomena with potentially different interested parties for each monitored phenomenon. Another important consideration is synchronized operation of the WSN nodes to ensure that the actions taken as a result of a detected event are timely and accurate. While a number of routing protocols have been proposed for WSNs, when these protocols are put in practical use, have been found to be unable to provide the robust performance that is required for many sensitive applications.
Authors present an innovative multi-sink routing protocol, which they have labeled ECTP, designed for the oil and gas industry. The application reliably synchronizes data delivery to multiple destinations (sinks). They have conducted several practical experiments using actual WSN hardware to evaluate the proposed protocol. They describe the results of their experiments and propose future directions for research.
