Understanding of Hydrotreating on Unsupported
Ni-Mo, Ni-W and Ni-Mo-W Sulfides

Introduction
Catalysts based on Mo and W sulfides are well known for their high activity in
removal of heteroatoms from hydrocarbons. These, Ni(Co)-promoted MoS2 and WS2
catalysts are used in large scale in hydrotreating processes typically
supported on alumina. However since 2001, exceptionally high active unsupported
mixed metal sulfides were successfully applied in refineries, triggering
interest in unsupported sulfide catalysts. These materials allow exploring the
surface chemistry and catalysis without carrier effects. Only few structural
models have been proposed and
structure-activity correlations have been little understood, despite of
abundant characterization results of bi- and multimetallic unsupported sulfides
and various applications in hydrotreating reactions. Therefore, we aim to
investigate hydrotreating properties as function of chemical and structural
parameters. The emphasis is laid on the catalytic function and interaction
among the different metal sulfides by studying unsupported Mo-Ni, W-Ni and
Mo-W-Ni sulfide materials.
Significance
The results of this work enable the design of
highly active sulfide catalyst with specific hydrotreating properties by
elucidating the role of the phases present and the interaction among them.
